Spirituality: You're Only Human?

Author: Nick Arrizza, M.D.

How often have you heard the expression "Well you're only human"?

This expression communicates a sentiment about human beings that goes something like this: accept that you are fallible, inadequate, prone to mistakes, not perfect, deficient, and not responsible for your actions and so on.

The bottom line is the belief that we as human beings are defective. There is often a great deal of "evidence" that is brought forth to "prove such a hypothesis. I suppose given the history of humankind with it's wealth of violence, destruction, and death this would be a hard one to argue against, wouldn't it?

I would however like to make the case that indeed all this "so called history" does not represent who we truly are. Tall order you say? Skeptical? Well let me give it a try.

Let's look directly at the belief itself:

"Human beings are defective".

As I assume you too are a human being this would also apply to you, in which case the statement for you would become:

(A) "I am defective".

So what is the usefulness for you of believing this about yourself?

Well some might say that it:

1. Helps you to acknowledge your limitations, so that,

2. When you do something wrong or let's say unethical that you will not feel responsible for it, so that,

3. You can blame it on your species, on the universe or on your God for making you this way, so that,

4. You will not feel accountable, so that,

5. You will not get punished, so that,

6. You will feel safe, secure, at peace, calm, relaxed, relieved, and therefore happy.

In other words the belief that:

(B) I am defective makes me feel safe, secure, at peace, calm, relaxed, relieved, and happy.

Does statement (B) resonate as a true statement for you? Highly unlikely because when you consider it and buy into the belief itself you likely feel: inadequate, deficient, unworthy, frustrated, limited, vulnerable, unsafe, anxious, sad, angry, helpless, trapped, hopeless, and depressed and like a victim.

So you see, statement (B) is absolutely false, isn't it?

If you recognize that please admit it to yourself and then notice how you feel inside.

If you're with me you probably feel some or all of the following: relief, peaceful, free, lighter, more joyful, more empowered, more present, more in charge of yourself and your life, you have an awareness of who you really are, a greater sense of love for your self and others, greater resilience and so on.

Now statement (B) and its predecessor (A) are toxic to you aren't they? That is they make you feel awful, not mention defective.

So do you wish to identify yourself with them any longer? If not then make a simple statement coming from deep within yourself asking that they be "purged" from your life once and for all.

Now notice how you feel inside.

Again the positive feelings I outlined above may have become even more anchored as part of your experience.

Now I want you to notice, as you are in this state, how the following statement feels to you:

"I am a Divine Being".

If it resonates with you then again please just admit that to yourself.

Notice again how you feel.

Now notice how this statement feels to you"

"I am defective"

At this point I'm guessing that, assuming you've followed me closely, it no longer feels like the truth, correct?

If you are having such an experience then you have made the first step to reclaiming your Divine Self.
