Relationship Advice: E is for Ego

Author: Jeff Herring

Have you ever let your ego get in the way of your love relationship?

If you answered honestly and said yes, don't despair, you are a part of a very big club.

Leave your ego at the door

Back in the 80s when several famous singers got together to sing and record "We Are the World" they were all told to leave their egos at the door.

That's good advice for love relationships too.

And yet we so often let our egos get in the way of a great relationship.

We get offended and hold a grudge. We fight and argue for our right to be right. We use the deadly silent treatment. We won't apologize unless our partner apologizes first. We refuse to believe that we have any possible contribution to the problems in the relationship.

And we wind up growing further and further apart, drifting from soul mates into room mates. No wonder so many relationships drift into a breakup looking for a place to happen.

One possible solution

One of the guys with whom I grew up did not get married until he was a crusty old bachelor well set in his ways. We all wondered how this thing was going to work out.

I knew they were going to make it when I asked him about his first year of marriage, and he said:

"I finally figured out that the sun would come up tomorrow if we tried something her way."

That's a wise man.
